Jim Bishop bought two-and-a-half  acres of land in central Colorado in 1959, when he was just 15 years old. Unable to purchase conventional building materials, he built a cabin out of stones found on his property. When passersby suggested his cabin resembled a castle, that’s what he decided it would be. That cabin is now a three-story medieval castle in the middle of the Wet Mountains. Complete with large gothic windows, steel walkways, stained glass and a stainless-steel, fire-breathing dragon, this Dementia Concretia is a spectacular, must-see sight.

Bishop single-handedly gathered and set over 1,000 tons of rock to create his stone, concrete and iron fortress. Known as America’s biggest one-man physical project, Bishop calls it “a monument to hardworking people.”

The castle operates on an enter at your own risk donation basis. We provide no services (except porta-potties) and charge no fees. We only hope you leave a donation to express your gratitude for being able to enjoy our hospitality. People are welcome to view the castle 7 days a week, 365 days a year, from sun-up to sun-down. We ask that no one enter when it’s dark. The castle is always under construction. You must accept responsibility for your own welfare. We are not responsible for your care. If you agree, then we encourage you to view the castle and enjoy the experience. If you do not agree, do not enter. We have a snack shack for drinks and concession items and a gift shop with unique collectibles. These shops are generally open 11am to 5pm depending on weather.

Bishop Castle is free and open to the public seven days a week during daylight hours.
