The Pines Ranch: Restoring Mind, Body, and Spirit since 1885

The Pines Ranch is a mountain getaway for cabin rentals, retreats, and reunions.

The Story of Pines Ranch

Reginald Cusack came to The United States in 1882 from Ireland, where he was a doctor. He came seeking a better environment for his asthma and overall health and purchased property in the Wet Mountain Valley.

His first time hosting people was in 1885, when local miners shared Reginald’s first cabin when they needed lodging. The cabin became known as “Bachelor’s Rest.” He operated a summer resort years later, with his wife, Gertrude. This resort was a place where visitors and family seeking a restful atmosphere and healthier environment could come to stay.

The ranch was awarded its name, The Pines, in 1911.

Beginning in the 1980s, a local rancher’s son and Vietnam veteran, Dean Rusk, turned The Pines into a dude ranch and DIY wedding venue.

Today the Pines Ranch passion is helping the people who help others. The Ranch offers a restful escape, especially for those working in high-stress service-oriented environments. You can also have a wedding, family reunion or retreat at the ranch.

Historic Site

Built in 1898, the “Old Lodge” was built by Gertrude’s future sister-in-law, Sara Isabelle “Belle” Holdsworth. They turned it into a lodge for The Pines Summer Resort, which they operated until the 1940s.

In 2021, the “Old Lodge” was nominated to be included on the National Registry of Historic Places. A new grant with History Colorado will help determine how best to preserve the building. In the coming years, they’ll be featuring a museum showcasing the history of the ranch and local area. Learn more on their website >>
