What is Chautauqua? Chautauqua was a late 19th and early 20th century adult education and social movement. It was an effective means of bringing culture, news of the world, and entertainment to even the most remote towns, including Westcliffe! Speakers like Mark Twain, debates on women’s suffrage and music played by John Philip Sousa and his band, were popular and enriched the lives of those who attended. Today, Chautauqua still embraces many of those elements, but it most often takes the form of actor/scholars portraying historical figures
