All Aboard Westcliffe is dedicated to telling the story of the railroad and its impact on the economic development and social fabric of the Wet Mountain Valley, specifically through preservation, restoration, education, and display. With beginnings in 1990, this group of volunteers has acquired and restored the original 1901 Denver and Rio Grande depot and single stall engine house-the last of its kind in Colorado. AAW also features a restored all wood caboose and outfit car from the late 1800’s open for walk-through. In 2021, AAW acquired a vintage model railroad originating in 1936 that is displayed with other in progress layouts in the basement of the Heritage Center.

Andy Mast was born and raised in a plain Amish community. Andy has no formal training or art education. His lifestyle and upbringing directly influence his artwork. His preference to the raw medium is born from living a simple life on the farm where he is most familiar with the simple blessings in life. By exercising his “God-given” talent, he found a purpose, to become an artist of hope. He desires to bring his viewers courage, peace and hope through his art. Andy lives and works out of his working studio gallery in Westcliffe, Colorado.

People, wildlife, landscape, still life and fantasy are the subject matter for most of his paintings and faces, whimsical figures and animals are woven into a continuous variety of pottery. Complementing his painting he also sculpts in clay, metal and wood.  In addition you can also find pottery, journals, and photography by Misty Morning Studio.

Big Nugget Farm.jpeg

We are a small off-grid family farm at 8500′ in Custer County, CO. Our hemp, produce, and animals are grown using natural and organic practices. We design and make all our bath and home products from scratch with quality natural ingredients.

We started Big Nugget Farm in 2017 after moving to Westcliffe from Denver. We had done some research into what hemp could do for the body and mind, and being as though we’re into natural and healthy living, it seemed to be a perfect fit. We have been growing hemp every year since, and 2023 will be our 7th year planting a hemp crop. We slowly started adding produce to our farm, beginning with onions and potatoes. Now we grow just about everything that will survive (and finish) at 8500′. We use organic and natural practices to grow everything, including our animals. We’ve been doing the local farmer’s market since 2018. We live completely off-grid with our four boys.

Since 1998, Dark Skies of the Wet Mountain Valley, a 501(c)3 non-profit, has been working to reduce local light pollution and create public awareness of a valuable and irreplaceable part of our Western heritage. They have worked effectively to demonstrate that the clear night sky above us is a tremendous natural resource to be preserved and treasured. It is one of the few experiences that serves to connect all peoples, providing a powerful sense of awe and wonder when viewing the night sky as our ancestors once did.

In 2015, Silver Cliff and Westcliffe were recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association as the ninth certified Dark Sky Community in the world; the first in Colorado, and with an elevation of 7,900′, the highest anywhere!

The Smokey Jack Observatory (SJO), located in The Bluff Park at the end of Main St, has become a top destination for people from all around the globe when visiting the Wet Mountain Valley. Visitors can view the heavens from the SJO with its state of the art, 14” computer-automated telescope. Free public Star Parties are at the SJO throughout the year celebrating various astronomical events along with reserved Star Parties from April-October for up to 10 visitors per night. All Star Parties are hosted by a trained Star Guide and can be booked online. (Unfortunately the SJO is closed in 2020).

Whether you are a serious amateur astronomer or someone who just wants the opportunity to enjoy a night sky free of light pollution and learn more about the awe-inspiring Universe right above us, you’ll have a special and unique opportunity when you visit one of Colorado’s most pristine night skies here in the Wet Mountain Valley.

Wouldn’t you like to get away from your busy everyday life and enjoy nature and free your mind instead? Come on a trail ride with Georgia Ranch and experience nature and a worry-free mind in a beautiful and tranquil environment. Find out what trust and camaraderie between you and “your” horse feels like. My horses are not being used as tools. They are wonderful non-judgmental partners and beloved family members.
I offer relaxed, calm rides on beautiful trails with peaceful and amazing views of nature. My horses are friendly, reliable and well-trained partners and will take good care of you. Your safety and enjoyment, as well as the well-being of the horses, is extremely important to me. You will have an unforgettable experience. Because I’m a small business owner, the rides are always private and you won’t ride in a large group with other people and I match horses and rider to riding skills. Therefore my capacity is limited and I take only up to 2 unexperienced riders with me. Regardless of skill, you don’t have to ride nose to tail. At the moment I hit the trails with only 2-3 guests at a time.
It is possible to pony a horse with a rider in case a guest feels unsafe. My guide horse is well trained for every situation. Flexible hours are available as I only guide one tour a day.
Trail rides guided by German owner with 25 years of western/trail riding experience and many different certifications for trail rides, lessons, horse boarding, horse training, hoof trimming and much more.

Greenleaf is a Full-Circle professional forestry, nursery, and wood products business located on Rosita Road near the County Landfill. It has been in operation since 1996, and began as an outlet for salvaged wood from its fire mitigation, forest health, and renewable harvesting projects on private land. Its 54″ circular sawmill is a classic in the industry, and diesel powered. Other off-grid equipment includes a large mechanical pole peeler and firewood processor, log unloader for semis, and many tractors and trucks. The operation is open to the public and is scaled to custom and effective utilization of local forest resources, as well as creation of jobs within the community.
Its unique recycled buildings came from a torn down WalMart building in Canon City.
The company provides services to small and large landowners, especially for fire mitigation and forest cleanup. Its slash disposal site at the sawmill is open to the public on a fee basis.
Recently Greenleaf expanded to include a Wood Products Gallery at 404 Main Street, Westcliffe, open mainly on weekends.

I’ve spent nearly 25 years—a quarter of a century—helping people buy and sell real estate in Westcliffe and Custer County.

Suffice to say, my community ties run deep. You’d be hard pressed to find a question about the local area I couldn’t answer…Whether you want a complete history lesson–or you’re simply curious where to find the best coffee. But it’s the relationships and trust I’ve built here among clients that I value most. If you’re new to the area, you’ll soon see, this is a special community. People are drawn here from all over and from various walks of life. But nearly all share a common goal: To enjoy life more.

You see, that’s what Westcliffe is all about–enjoying life. And I believe your real estate transaction should reflect this. To that end, I’m here to make your transition seamless and exciting. You’ll enjoy dedicated, personal attention at every step to alleviate the typical hassles and stressors. Our process is designed to make it as easy and streamlined as possible, even if you’re handling your transaction remotely. The truth is, whether you’re buying or selling, your journey is full of decisions–some tough. But as former clients can attest, you’ll have peace of mind knowing every choice you make is backed by unmatched local market knowledge and expertise.

Excited to get started? Good, me too!

Education vs. Extinction

Mission: Wolf is a solar-powered nature center that provides a sanctuary for unwanted captive-born wolves and horses. We offer experiential education to inspire the public to become stewards of the earth.

Since 1988 we have provided lifelong care for 125 wolves and 25 horses, facilitated experiential wolf education with over 1 million people and preserved 350 acres of pristine subalpine habitat. Our community of volunteers from around the world invites you to visit us.

Day Visits

Sign up for a sanctuary experience at Mission:Wolf. During the guided visit, you will have the chance to spot some of our 23 wolves and wolf-dogs while learning about wolf behavior, biology, ecology, the stories of our wolves, and (for those interested) the systems we have in place to live on solar power at 9,500ft.

We offer these guided experiences by donation. Your guide will talk with you about the best ways you can support us, whether through a donation or by volunteering. This can be taken care of on-site.

Volunteer

Mission:Wolf has depended for decades on the hard work of our passionate volunteers, who stay anywhere from a few hours to a couple of weeks. Volunteers are truly the backbone of Mission: Wolf. We couldn’t serve the animals without them.
In 2022, more than 200 volunteers donated 2,500+ hours of work to the wolves. Come pitch a tent and help out for the weekend! Email info@missionwolf.org or call 719-859-2157 to get on the volunteer calendar.

Located in the Wet Mountain Valley, Valley Ace Hardware has been a family owned and operated business since 1885 that focuses on serving and evolving to fit the needs of the community. As the area flooded with gold and silver mining in the 1800s, we began as a blacksmith and wheelwright shop serving the mining communities of the Sangre de Christo and Sierra Mojado Mountains of South Central Colorado. As the mines slowed down, our beautiful valley grew into a ranching community and we changed to serve the needs of the ranchers and cattlemen.

With 35+ years of construction experience and knowledge, and after getting broken in a fall, my wife said “ Hey old man its time you go get your Real. Estate License.” After helping friends and family get their houses ready to sell, and helping them buy houses it seemed like a no-brainer. With five plus years now of working with buyers and sellers in the region achieve their dreams and help them move on to others, it has been a good fit. Dog and cat friendly too.
Truth, Honesty and High Morals are what I live by…

Willow Wind Farm is a ranch located in the Wet Mountain Valley. We specialize in breeding fine fiber animals and fine fiber end products. We have over 150 critters on the ranch; approx. 125 alpacas, 20 colored merino sheep, 3 dairy goats, 5 llamas, chickens and 5 cats and a dog. We strive to produce the majority of our food and grow in an all season greenhouse while utilizing garden space outside for summer growing. It is not uncommon for us to have 40+ youngsters running around of any and all species.

We shear all the fiber animals the end of May. We sort and grade 1000’s of pounds of fiber in June and July. We process another 300 pounds of select fiber in the cottage industry making yarn and other fine products. Part of our process is strictly home grown while part of our process involves fiber from the ranch as well as fiber that is collected from ranches in the western US. The larger scale production happens all within the US milling process and we are proud to represent growth and processing that is 100% USA.

We love visitors and are open to tours by reservation only on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 2pm. Please make your reservation 24 hours in advance.
Farm tour prices are $15/ person (ages 12 and under are free!) or you can apply that $15 to a purchase of $100 or more in our store located on the farm filled with our quality, home grown, fiber products.
We are so happy to have our community visiting the farm, and truly appreciate all the love and support. However, we cannot accept walk-ins or unannounced visits, and appreciate attention to this as well.
Please email Annie at annie@willowwindfarm.net or message us on our Willow Wind Farm Facebook page to schedule your farm tour visit!
Thank you!! We look forward to seeing you!
