The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad extended a rail line into the Wet Mountain Valley in 1881 to take advantage of Silver Cliff’s mining boom. The line ended one mile west of Silver Cliff at a new depot, around which Wet Mountain Valley residents built Westcliffe, a true railroad town.

The mining camps and the railroad are now gone, but the town of Westcliffe survives along with All Aboard Westcliffe, an interpretive center and railroad museum filled with historic artifacts and memorabilia showcasing Custer County’s rich railroad history.

A former freight warehouse on Rosita Street serves as All Aboard Westcliffe’s headquarters and a community meeting space, while a 1901 engine house next door is its museum. Refurbished rail cars and a historic wagon sit outside, while a model of the Wet Mountain Valley, a model railroad, a variety of artifacts, a Google Earth collage and dozens of photos fill the engine house.

Explore Custer County’s intriguing railroad stories at All Aboard Westcliffe, open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Memorial Day through mid-September.

Since 1998, Dark Skies of the Wet Mountain Valley, a 501(c)3 non-profit, has been working to reduce local light pollution and create public awareness of a valuable and irreplaceable part of our Western heritage. They have worked effectively to demonstrate that the clear night sky above us is a tremendous natural resource to be preserved and treasured. It is one of the few experiences that serves to connect all peoples, providing a powerful sense of awe and wonder when viewing the night sky as our ancestors once did.

In 2015, Silver Cliff and Westcliffe were recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association as the ninth certified Dark Sky Community in the world; the first in Colorado, and with an elevation of 7,900′, the highest anywhere!

The Smokey Jack Observatory (SJO), located in The Bluff Park at the end of Main St, has become a top destination for people from all around the globe when visiting the Wet Mountain Valley. Visitors can view the heavens from the SJO with its state of the art, 14” computer-automated telescope. Free public Star Parties are at the SJO throughout the year celebrating various astronomical events along with reserved Star Parties from April-October for up to 10 visitors per night. All Star Parties are hosted by a trained Star Guide and can be booked online. (Unfortunately the SJO is closed in 2020).

Lower level walkout includes secondary living space with stone fireplace, tall ceilings, french doors to the outside patio, wet bar, 3 bedrooms, one full and one ¾ bath. 600 square feet of covered decking on the south and west sides of the home provide a fabulous spot to soak up peaceful mountain surroundings, view local wildlife, and experience unforgettable sunsets.

Although you could spend all day on the deck enjoying the view, board games, dishnetwork and wireless internet are available for your entertainment. A large laundry room with a washer and dryer is located on the main floor and a second washer and dryer are available on the lower level.

The 3.65 acre property is located just 14 minutes southeast of Westcliffe via Colorado Highway 69 and Rosita Road (CR 328), and is easily accessed with just .3 miles of unpaved roads.

As the area flooded with gold and silver mining in the 1800s, we began as a blacksmith and wheelwright shop serving the mining communities of the Sangre de Christo and Sierra Mojado Mountains of South Central Colorado. The Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts (WCPA) was incorporated in 1992 and received its not-for-profit status the following year. The WCPA is housed in the Historic Jones Theater and in the adjoining Studio 2 at 2nd and Main Streets in Westcliffe, Colorado.

Our goals are to provide a Center for the Performing Arts in the picturesque Wet Mountain Valley of Colorado. We encourage new playwrights and provide classes and theater training each summer through the co-operation of local universities. WCPA provides a full summer season of plays, music, dance and classic as well as year-round first-run motion pictures. We produce both new plays and musicals as well as seasoned favorites: comedy, drama, melodrama and one man and woman shows.
